Troy,

99% of the PSAL "Varsity"  HEAD coaches are licensed teachers and work in that capacity in a public school. In some rare cases, a para-professional, teacher aid or "community staffer" can be on a staff & assume the position of HEAD coach, only IF a regular teacher is assigned to the team, sits on the bench & is the legal staff representative. The financial arrangement is something that has to be worked out with the school's administration.

There are also many "volunteer" coaches who have a friendship/relationship with the head coach and are listed as an "assistant". Some of these "volunteers" can also be outside community coaches who often bring some of their players into the school to be varsity players & at the same time assist in coaching the team @ practices & in games.

In the CHSAA & PSAA (PVT. SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION) where practically every school has coaches for their freshmen, JV & Varsity coaches. The are usually assisted by one or more volunteers. Think about these situations I've mentioned & think about where you might fit in well.  There are also many, many "grass roots-outside" teams who may be open to having you work with them.

I hope this gives you some ideas on how best to reach your goal. Stay in touch & keep me informed about your situation.

Hi coach my name is Derrick Irving, I am a 6'1 combo guard Class of 2016. I go to St. John's Prep in Astoria, Queens, but I live in Harlem. I am a very hard worker and I am ready to put forth effort to win. I averaged 17 ppg and 5 apg this year and we lost in the championship game. I am a very skilled player and a coach on the floor. I can score in multiple ways and set up my teammates as well. I am a lock down defender. I am contacting you to let you know that if you ever know of an opportunity to play for a team, in a tournament, a workout/clinic, or a high school, prep school, or college that is looking for players please let me know. You can contact me at 347-932-7280 or email me at derrickstudent@gmail.com. Thank you for your time and have a nice day
